I haven't been to this site for a long, long time and I am saddened to see the passing of a grand lady from the Palisade area. I believe I am accurate in saying that Marjorie Burr taught all five of Roy Watson's children in the grade school years. There was a 1 room school house up on the Willow River where she taught in the earliest years. She taught me in the 6th grade as I recall and I have the fondest memories of her great talent as a teacher and a mentor. She was always most gracious and a wonderful humanitarian. My whole family held her in esteem. I remember seeing her at my late Mother's 80th and 85th birthday parties. I will never forget the positive impact she made on my entire family.

We have so missed Connie Pettersen’s reporting and writing in the NewsHopper. Just found out in this week’s copy of the Hopper that she is very ill. In our opinion she is one of the better reporters/writers locally and we wish her a complete recovery. There is an address in the Hopper this week where cards and letters may be sent to her at Miller-Dwan Rehab Center, 502 East 2nd Street, Duluth, MN. 55805

After the recent passing of my grandmother, my family had the heart breaking task of planning the funeral. Many steps are included in this and alot of learning along the way. I was very disappointed to find that the Aitkin Age is the ONLY paper in the area that CHARGES to have an obituary placed in the paper. How is it possible to put a cost on someones life ending but all other "happy" announcements are free.

I was so frustrated trying to shop yesterday. I wanted to purchase some balogna lunch meat. In the meat case was only Oscar Meyer, a monopoly, nnd SuperValue brand. Even the deli didn't have another brand. Then, what I presume was the dept. mgr. says "You'll have to go to another store". Obivious don't you think? Went to the Birch Street. Same there. I was certain I could find deli balogna in McGregor, but I had already wasted enough time and gas in Aitkin. I like the people of Aitkin and where I live but not the shopping issues I have here. Fortunately there is one station that has non-oxygenated gas. One of the other stations claims to have it but have no "stickers" up. By law they have to be on the pumps if it is non-oxygenated. They've told me for 3 years they have it and claim they can't get the labels to stick to the pumps. Sorry, just frustrated. You can't even get Hostess products in Aitkin, as is the case with other items, because the distributor feels it's too far north. By the way, I KNOW that SuperValue dictates much of what the store carries.

Hey Justin, I saw this in the letter to the editor. apparently my mother who lives in Aitkin Manor has had experiance with this. read: Isn't it the law to stop in Aitkin? I recently rode my electric scooter to the Dollar store at the southern end of town. I had the front tire in the crosswalk and the vehicles going north stopped, but the two vehicles going south didn't. In fact it sounded like they sped up. Is it not the law to stop? I would like for an officer to please write a letter to the Age, in big, bold letters. Cindy Davies, Aitkin

Some of you may have read the article about the little 4 year old boy hit and killed Sat. by a driver on the right shoulder, while all other cars were stopped to allow children and dogs cross in downtown Merrifield on Sat. Kenny and I were the first car to stop going southbound on our way to my aunts funeral in Brainerd ( we had just picked up my cousin in Nisswa). Kenny waved the children on, as did the other vehicle going northbound. Suddenly a car sped past us to the right on the shoulder, hit and killed the little boy. As a Respiratory Therapist, I arrived first with another man to the boy. We did all, but it was obvious that the little boy died the moment of impact. The driver is being held in Crowing Cty. jail for criminal vehicular homicide awaiting charges. It is a sight that I will never forget. Prayers and Blessings to the family if they read the Aitkin paper.

I have seen the old Methodist Church from Swatara when I visited the area in July of 2008, it is now owned by a couple who have transormed it into a private residence. I like the idea that they kept the church pretty close to its original dimensions. When I looked at the listing of churches in Aitkin County, I did not see any churches listed in Swatara. I remember there also being a Roman Catholic church in Swatara also. Did both congregations dwindle away! I do remember how these churches were always great places for the people in the community to bond. Some would call it progress when things from the past are gone, I just find it sad!

Mike, The drug problem has always been a big issue, even back in the 70's when i was a teenager. I see a lot of people who know about the problem, but they just turn their heads and pretend they don't see the problem. I'm sorry I don't know of any ways to fix the problem, except parents need to instill the thought into there children when they are young that drugs are bad. You need to talk to your kids!! Don't leave it up to the schools or their peers to talk to them. As parents we have to start taking responsibility for our kids.

Maybe you all should focus on the drug problem in Aitkin everyone there seems to deny ?Or the definate lack of decent paying jobs???Or how just cause you know someone and your local you get the job over a newcomer to town who probably has just as much ability or more??Nice to see new business like McDonalds come into town, promte good business compete with local businessmen that have held wages so low in Aitkin for so long.We need more new businesses especially since we are pretty much a gateway to the north and Brainerd Lakes area.Don't get me wrong not trying to put Aitkin down lived there for alot of years .But sooner or later people need to face the facts!!

Tim, If you think the people in Minnesota are lazy drivers, you should never drive in New York. Most of them think the turning signal is just an accessory. They don't use them, they just jerk over into your lane and then put on the brakes, because the traffic ahead of them has now stopped. Or the ones who weave from one lane to the next so they can be in front of everyone else, except here, you are never the one in front. I would much rather drive in Minnesota, at least the people are a bit more courteous.

Now that the subject of laziness is on everyones mind, let's explore another exhibition of laziness. Do you ever wonder, while following another vehicle, the intentions of the driver when the stop lights are on constantly, no matter whether it speeds up or slows down? They are too lazy to move their right foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal. How about this - while following another vehicle, all of a sudden the brake lights come on, with no turn signals. Sheer laziness! Another lazy example is people too lazy to turn on their lights at dawn or dusk, or when they are using their windshield wipers. Oh, and another one the ones that are too lazy to turn the steering wheel another 1/8 of a turn to exit an inside or outside lane and enter the corresponding lane.

I cannot believe the number of "Guestbook" readers and contributors that condone and accept the sloppy sentence structure, improper grammar, and lack of punctuation and capital letters in their responses. Someone made the excuse that maybe they didn't get the chance to learn. That's lame - the first 12 years of school are free in the U.S.of A.. Go to school, pay attention, learn something. Don't blame everyone else for your lack of ambition. That's the trouble with today's society in that everyone is quick to blame others for their own laziness. That's the key word - laziness. You were too lazy to learn proper composition and now you are too lazy to use it. Another made the suggestion that it was just a blog and not a letter to the president. What's the difference? Regardless of the addressee, write properly. It's no wonder someone compalined they couldn't find a job. You would have to keep your fingers off the keyboard and keep your mouth shut to get to first base.

I recently discovered a fantastic resource at www.newspaperarchive.com. Having been born in Winona and raised in Austin, it just so happened that a good percentage of their newspapers have been archived at this site. Could the Aitkin Independent Age consider making its copies available there? It is very user friendly and contains Austin Daily Heralds back to the 1800s. If this would be a project retired folks could do, I have a lot of relatives in the area who might be willing to help! Please contact me!

Celia...Bravo for your comment! There are many people who did not have the advantage of improving grammar throughout the years, however they are totally qualified. Good luck Tim! Whether a person is "long haired", "poor at grammar", "old" like me, or have 3 eyes....they all should be given a chance! Employers, don't just look at the exterior, use your GUT instead of your head! Good Grief!!!! There are plenty qualified people out there!

To Traci A bit like the pot calling the kettle black, since you misspelled "grammar." To Tim A quick response indicates that you weren't really in the running...even in St. Cloud. If it is indeed your hair, there's one way to find out. Cut it. If you still don't get a job, let it grow back. If you DO get a job, wait until you've proven yourself before you let it grow back. It may be unfair and/or biased, but we tried to change it in the 60s and 70s and weren't successful. I don't think the world will bow to you, either. How bad do you want a job? Good luck.

I agree with Tim. There are very few opportunities in Aitkin for employment. I am retired, but have applied for several positions as well. Even upon my request to hear back after interview, they don't seem to have the courtesy to do so. Long haired, or retired...shouldn't it continue to remain equal opportunity?

I want to "Thank" Dick Norlauder and Bonnie, for sending me some very old articles about my grandmother. You went above and beyond any of my expectations, and I am so very very grateful for your time and mailing these to me. With warmest regards and appreciation, Thank you again

Message to Tim: Perhaps you are unable to find a job due to your poor grammer and spelling.

I just don't understand why aitkin has no legit job oppurtunities? i continue to turn in applications to numerous businesses and never get call backs. I lived in St Cloud this past year and it seemed everywhere i applied would inform me within' 48 hours. I understand the difference in size between St Cloud and Aitkin. Somebody help me find a job. I have experience in several categories. I think its just because i have long hair that businesses in Aitkin refuse to hire me.

I do agree with Tom Jones if you are going to write something in the paper people should check your resources before openning your month.

I wish to thank the AitkinAge staff for the clipping of the Camp Tikvah article they mailed me. I worked at Camp Tikvah the summers of 1973 and 1974. I learned to appreciate another culture. Living in a rural community we aren't exposed to a diverse society. I think exposure makes us a more tolerant people. Keep up the great articles!

Please note Edwin R. Tyren had words spelled wrong in his posting. "Synonim" should be spelled "synonym". If you are going to berate people for their english, please check yours first. Thanks.

Edwin Tyren, you are not alone!! Although I did not graduate from AHS (St. Francis HS, Little Falls, MN, Class of '64) I am also appalled at the misuse and abuse of the English language. What really scares me is the fact that these are the future leaders of our nation and they cannot spell or write a sentence correctly.
